Wooden Bicycles!
This is a Portuguese project, though the website is in English. By using wood as the main frame you'd get lightness. Wood of course is a very traditional material. In World War II, the Mosquito Fighter bomber was made of wood and could carry the same bomb load as a Flying Fortress. It was very fast.

There are four frame models- click the image of each to see an example of a bike. The website also lists manufacturers who supply the rest of the parts (wheels, gears etc).
