What goes on in a Console Arcade Game
This is definitely different and possibly only of appeal to people who like to look "under the cover". It lifts the veil on what goes on in the graphics of a NES console game (Mario World or Marios Bros I guess) when a game is played. The author has taken old NES game cartridges and revealed the graphics in them- there's a link to a downloadable pdf on this page.
There is a Java popup that takes about 30 seconds to get started (pictured). Let the game run - it's automatic, you can't play it and you can see the sprites on the right hand side change as Mario moves. The NES was limited in it's hardware support for graphics so programmers had to be very inventive in developing games. 20 years ago It's what I did for a living!
