US Zip Codes Sorted and Displayed
This is interesting. In the US, each area has it's own zip code, analgous to post codes as used in the UK and Canada. While post codes can be more intuitive and cover on average 16 properties each, zipcodes are 5 digit numbers and much easier to work with but cover much larger areas. Everyone in the world used to know the zipcode for Beverley Hills in the mid 90s. (90210) thanks to the TV program of that name. The UK has seven different post code formats. I know, I've worked with the Post Office data set!
Robert Kosara (whose site this is) is into visualization techniques and wondered what is the significance if any of the allocation of Zipcodes. So he plotted them on the map (the US Govt gives away Geodata for zipcodes <-> Longitude and Latitude, here in the UK we have to pay an arm and leg for it) in sorted order, coloured it in and this is the result. You can download various versions of this in PDF format, with or without state names. It looks sketched. Very neat!
