At the start of the 20th century, Sam Loyd who lived in New York was considered one of the best chess players in the US and 15th in the world. He was also a puzzle inventor- if you know the sliding 15 blocks where you have to slide the blocks to put them in order, well Sam Loyd invented it.
In 1911, he published a Cyclopedia of 5,000 puzzles, tricks and conundrums. It has been scanned and put on the web. The picture shows the pages- just click any to ownload the images from his book.
