Russians and Alcohol
Here's a Russian joke from the 1980s.
It's the late 1980s and Gorbachev has been cutting down on the availability of Vodka because there's too much alcoholism in Russia. Two blokes are queuing at a state shop not far from Red Square.
Ivan. "I think it's terrible what Gorby has done with our vodka. How can I get through life without my daily ration? It's inhumane. Why if I had that Gorby here now, I'd teach him a trick or two with my fists."
Sergei. "I agree Comrade. Did you know that his office is just round the corner. If you really want to give him a piece of your mind, why don't you go and visit him. I'll keep your place in the queue."
Ivan. "I will comrade. Thank you." - off he goes.
Ten minutes later he returns looking forlorn.
Sergei. "Well comrade. did you teach that no good Gorby a lesson? "
Ivan. "Nyet. The queue to bash him is longer than this one…"
The poster is from the Museum of Anti-Alcohol posters by Yuri Matrosovich, with some 30 odd posters from the Soviet era, which are works of art. The text on the poster reads "Who's a smart guy, and who's a fool! One's got a book and the other's at the bar." . I'll er drink to that!
