Photos from Hubble Telescope
This is one of those sites that the US Govt does so well – the official Hubble Site. It is produced by the Space Telescope Science Institute's Office of Public Outreach. Based in Baltimore's Inner Harbor area, the Hubble Space Telescope's National Visitor Centre is the place to visit for information about Hubble.
Hubble itself is well known and somewhat infamous for originally having blurry optics, which required a fix. Continual upgrades are a way of life with Hubble, adding new equipment or replacing equipment that has reached the end of it's life. A telescope the size of a large school bus can hold a lot of equipment and the 4th Servicing Mission has just been approved to do an upgrade.
Being located above the atmosphere, the images that Hubble receives are undistorted by passage through the atmosphere and there are some great photos in the gallery pages. Pictured above is Jupiter. The blemish is the famous red spot (clouds) which is bigger than Earth. You can see a comparison of Red Spot's szie and Earth's size here on the Wikipedia Jupiter page.
