Noisiest Cities in England and Wales
A hearing aid manufacturer - Widex produced a traffic survey noise report for cities in England and Wales. This was conducted by Deepak Prasher, Professor of Audiology at the Ear Institute, University College London. According to WHO ( the World Health Organisation), outdoor noise levels should not exceed 55dBA and below the night it should be 45 dBA. The 7 page report though shows that most of the cities were well above these levels.
The picture is a graphic illustration (click for full size image) by the Daily Telegraph newspaper of the report. You can read the original report on this page. (Link Halfway down the right hand side) It's in MS Word and the graphed values on the image come from the last page of the document.
The measurement dBA is a logarithmic scale- it's a measure of power and every 3dBA increase means it's twice as noisy. So Birmingham on 79.1 dBA is twice as noisy as Bournemouth at 76 dBA.
