More on the BigOptOut Story
Mentioned just a few days ago here, here is an update that may clarify what the Bigoptout is about.
With disregard for patient confidentiality, data protection laws and human rights laws, the Government has broken their promise that patients would be able to prevent their medical records being uploaded to the troubled £12 billion NHS system.
Earlier this week, the British Medical Association also expressed concern, saying that only patients who consent should have their medical records uploaded.
In a recent poll, 53% of patients opposed the NHS database. Four fifths of GPs expressed concern with 52% considering refusing Government orders to upload medical records without patients' consent.
Patients have always assumed that anything they say to their GPs is confidential. For some people eg rape victims, the most private details of our lives are in those records. What right have ministers suddenly gained to rob us of that privacy?
Bristol NO2ID co-ordinator, Dave Gould, told us: "This is a prime example of how the database state will ride roughshod over our lives. Who knows how this data will be used, linked and searched? Given that most GPs are considering rebelling, we strongly recommend that everyone write to their GP, asking them to protect their confidentiality and refuse to upload their medical records."
NO2ID's sister campaign, The Big Opt Out have provided a letter, designed by GPs, to help: http://www.TheBigOptOut.org/optoutletter
