Largest Model Railway in the World!
Hamburg is famous for many things but I'd never realised it was home to a massive (HO scale – 1/82nd) model railway. The stats are quite staggering (on this page) eg "Longest train 14.51 metres (that's nearly 44 feet long!) , 9 kilometers of track (with 6 KM further to be added!) and so far they have spent 375,000 man hours building it. There are 700 trains with another 800 to be added, all controlled by 33 computers.
Pictured is one of the track layouts, this took 9 months to build and has 600 meters of track with 40 trains pulling 400 cars and 8,000 man hours over 9 months. There's a lot on the site as well (photos, layouts, stats) as well as opening tinmes, prices etc.
