Interactive L-System- Create Plants!
An L-System (short for Lindenmayer System) is a formal grammar used originally to model plant growth and development. This website allows you to specify grammars and plot them using a language that reminds me of Logo. If this sounds like hard work, then there are a predefined set of examples to view (and modify if you like!)
The L-System was developed by the Hungarian biologist Aristid Lindenmayer. Originally the L-systems were devised to provide a formal description of the development of such simple multicellular organisms, and to illustrate the neighbourhood relationships between plant cells. Later on, this system was extended to describe higher plants and complex branching structures.
You can view a collection of different shapes from the Presets pull down on the right- some are fractal based such as the Sierpinski triangle, others are remarkably plant like. You can change the parameters, even the grammar to try out new shapes in the box above the diagram.
You can find more details on the help and about L-Systems on Wikipedia.org
