Link to Shift GameThis is quite clever. You move a little man through a maze to get to the “end of screen” door, picking up keys to unlock barriers and avoiding jumping or moving onto the spikes.

So far so normal. However if you press the shift key, everything inverts - the screen dump actually shows the same screen twice, both normally and when it’s inverted. (Inverted 180 degrees and flipped colour).Lots of screens to get through and you will need to press shift as well as think outside the box. Very clever.

BTW, both this and the previous game are by Armor Games- a coincidence but also a tribute to the quality of their games. (And no I have no connection to them, financial or otherwise!)

Link to StormWindsThis is something of an epic game! One of the few Flash games that has a campaign. It’s the usual tower defence game except the view is sideways not a top view.

You’ve got 4 turret positions with a wide variety of weapons, most of which you can’t afford to start with but you earn points as you progress. It has the dumb logic that as your country’s last hope you are given a weak initial defence and the enemy always attacks starting with the weakest and gradually progressing to strongest. Still it wouldn’t be much of a game otherwise!

Beautiful graphics, decent but ultimately irritating music and great game-play make this an excellent diversion. I suspect it could be a real time killer so you have been warned!

Link to Circlo GameThis is quite a fun diversion. In the centre is a rotating arm with various coloured balls attached. You have a ball shooting gun that revolves around the perimeter. You have to shoot the ball to hit other balls of the same colour so they fall off the centre.

It’s all about the timing and the first few levels are pretty easy. After that…

Link to Box2D in Flash websiteThis is a Flash demo of a C++ Physics engine. Yes it sounds like something only a programmers mother would recommend but some of the demos are fun such as the falling rag dolls pictured.

A physics engine is a piece of code that lets software model real world physics. A human can be thought of as a series of lines joined together (that describes the limits of my artistic ability!). But the angles that those lines make is constrained in the real world by bones, ligaments etc. Bending your arms back until they snap off is not a good idea!

In software a physics engine does that and lots more- objects roll or slide down slopes according to the pull of gravity and friction. This site shows a clever bit of conversion work off a C++ (programming language) physics engine into Flash. Very impressive.

Link to CuriousThe point and click puzzle genre has grown out of nowhere over the last few years and there are lots of them around. The idea is that each screen is a visual puzzle. When you click on part of the screen something happens. You have to figure out the ordering and solve that screen.

Where they vary is the degree of animation, sounds etc and the difficulty of the puzzles. The Grow puzzles are more logical while in Curious you have to help the main character escape each screen. This is guaranteed to keep you puzzling for quite a while!

Link to Parking Zone PuzzleA nice colourful and simple to play puzzle. It works on the same principle as the plastic sliding blocks puzzles I did as a kid, where I had to slide the pieces to solve the puzzle. I.e. there is one gap so you can move any piece that can go into that gap.

Here you click on a car to drive it into the space and continue until all the cars in each level are in their colour coordinated parking spaces.

Link to Newsmap

Newsmap is a news headline aggregator written in Flash. It’s pretty slick and shows headlines according to how popular the story is- judged by how many sources carry it. You can display them in a square look ( as shown) or an almost bookshelf type look.

Particularly clever is the way you can filter by major countries. If you click on a section, it shows you how many sites have this story and you can click through to one- though I’m not sure how it chooses.

Link to stackopolis.comThis is a very polished game with beautiful graphics and excellent sound track.

You have to reposition tiles by clicking on them and then clicking the destination, within a time period. It’s pretty frenetic, as there are big piles to reduce and holes to fill in. Each level has a jump code so after completing it you can get straight back to it in the future. It’s very well done; nice backdrops as well.

Link to AmaztypeThis is really clever. Select one of the Amazon websites (com, uk, Japan or Canada) then a category (books, music or dvd/videos) and a search phrase.

I entered portent and you can see the word in the picture. Move your mouse over and click and it expands- I clicked a picture in the lower half of the “o” in portent (I highlighted this and combined into one image with box and arrow) , so you can see the book covers. As you move over then you get a pop up with book details etc. Now click again and you’re on the chosen site, on the page for that book etc. Quite clever especially as it’s a Japanese site (with text in English) and it has to pull the details and images from the selected Amazon site.

Link to HexiomThis is a really simple puzzle but it makes you think.

Just place the hexagons so the number on each hex matches the number of neighbours. They change colours, green means too few neighbours, yellow is right and red iis too many. When all are yellow you go onto the next level.

As you can see I got to level 21. Some hexagons can’t be moved so it gets challenging. An excellent puzzle.

Link to 31 Flash Games and Puzzles by TonytPaI haven’t tried all 31 yet but the one shown is a clever game where you slide blocks of symbols up, left, right and down. If you get 3 of the same next to each other they vanish and you get points. Very simple but ingenious.

Also of note, if you want to learn how to write flash tiled games like this, there are a considerable number of tutorials on his site.

Link to Paper Plane ContestI think is the part of an Australian promotion for a Microsoft XBOX game.

Fly your paper plane as far as you can by dragging it with the mouse and releasing. The angle and speed affect its flight. If it gets to the Window it will fly a long way… if!

The full image is 1.5 Billion pixels (Ie GigaPixel). On the linked site you can zoom in or out to your hearts content. A fabulous piece of work- both the original, and this Flash viewable GigaPixel image.
