This is one man's website against speed cameras. Because of all the vested interests and revenue earning possibilities of speed cameras in the UK, this is a very contentious issue. On any given road 85% of drivers drive at a speed that they feel safe and comfortable with. So if you lower the speed limit below this comfortable speed, you will catch a lot of people with a speed camera even though the road's safety aspects has not changed. That to me seems immoral- just highway robbery. Worse is that the points gained push up insurance and could lose your licence. If you feel that cameras are there for safety then ask yourself why the official guidelines for positioning them suggest places where revenues can be maximised, not the safety improved? Also they repeat the big lie that speeding causes 1/3rd of accidents- it doesn't - it's about 5%. The Govt 's own research lab figures indicate that so why do they insist on the 1/3rd lie?
Paul Smith, a retired road engineer is pro safety and argues convincingly that speed cameras have made the roads less safe as people spend too much time looking out for them rather than driving safely. His site strips away the excuses that cameras are there for safety not revenue. If you're a UK driver, take a look at the straight facts not the often repeated lies told by people who just want your money!
