If I dig deep enough…where will I come out?
This is amusing. As a child my parents used to tell me that if I digged deep enough, I'd come out in China. Now putting the logistics aside if I'd removed enough earth to cover the village where I lived (Foulridge in Lancashire) to a depth of a few miles in soil, magma, igneous rock etc as well as molten lava- boy would I have been unpopular; the improbable physics (as I dug deep enough the temperature would rise dramatically and gravity would decrease), the unimaginable distance involved, some 8000 miles, the energy required- I'd have needed at least 8 weetabix/shredded wheat a day, well do you know my parents would have still been wrong.
The linked website uses Google maps to show where you emerge if you click on it- ie the antipodean points. I'd have emerged, very wet indeed in the Pacific ocean somewhere to the south east of New Zealand. The maps shows where I'd emerge if I started in New Zealand. (Spain). To emerge in China, I'd need to start digging in Argentina. Parents, huh- what do they know?
