Geneology of Influence
Imagine a visualization of the connections between the most influential writers, artists, philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians of Western culture. This is what it might look like. (I borrowed the text from Mike's website, colour and all).

The concept is straightforward and he provides a Java applet as well so you can see the links in more detail. Best of all though, he has been blogging about this since August 2006 so you can read up on this here.
