I watched an excellent 20 minute video of lecture by Professor Hans Rossling talking about the third world and the progress made and being made there. He illustrated his lecture with some excellent visuals. The chart illustrated is part of those visuals and was created by fre software that Professor Rossling and others are developing. That is what gapminder.org does.

Large tables of figures are by and large incomprehensible to most people. Good visualisations like in the video of the lecture make a world of difference. You can play with those charts on the gapminder site. Very neat.
