Fabulous and Forty

David has taken off on a well-deserved break after two months of hard work here. Personally, I have just got back from a holiday in Barcelona with mum and dad. It was a much needed break. My first proper holiday in ten years, and the first time I did anything alone with my parents since I was 12.
Barcelona is a fantastic city, and I can strongly recommend a visit. It is one of those places you realise you’ll have to come back to, as it has so much to offer. And I’m not talking about the beach here, even though it is a Mediterranean city. In fact, my only contact with the beach was one night when we had dinner at a restaurant by the sea. We sat outside in the dark, enjoying the taste of seafood, the smell of salt water and seaweed in the air, and the soothing sound of the sea caressing the beach. I was so infatuated, I had to kick my shoes off an walk on the beach on our way back to the hotel. As I felt the sand between my toes, and the water reached my knees, I felt totally happy and at ease. Life is such a precious gift, yet we take it for granted. Always asking for more and better. Never quite happy with what we have and where we are.
I was interrupted in my thoughts by a magnificent fireworks display. The ninth International Fireworks Festival began that night with a show of exceptional quality and design from the Chinese company Qingcao Jinsheng Fireworks. Naturally, I pretended it was there just for me… =)
If you need a break and want to go somewhere special, I can recommend a trip to Barca. Indulge in seafood and wine, nourish your cultural nerve with a bit of Dalí, Picasso, and Gaudí, and enjoy the Mediterranean, Cosmopolitan atmosphere. The Barcelona City website (link below) tells you all you need to know about the place and has some really nice 360° pics of the city.
My holiday marked the end of a long and rocky road towards a better future. There were no wild bells on the Barca beach, but the fireworks rang out the old. I came back bright eyed, bushy tailed, fabulous and forty. Ready to let go of a lot of old dead weight and face something new.
Clearly, life begins at 40…
