Evolution in Just 20 Years!
The arrival of competition from another type of finch and subsequent ground conditions forced the Medium Ground finch (Geospiza fortis), also known as Darwin's Finch to evolve a smaller beak within one bird generation.
Since 1982 the larger G. magnirostris finches had been eating the larger seeds of the island's puncture vine plants and forcing the smaller finches to eat smaller seeds from other plants. The bigger beaked fortis finches did not do as well as the smaller beaked ones and thus evolution had a very rapid effect.
