Etsy – Online Craft Marketplace
As a kid, my French knitting was so good that the French government wanted to give me an award. (If you believe that…I've some tablets that will cure gullibility- want to buy them?). Joking apart I used to make things – masks with papier mache, cotton bobbin tanks, water rockets, and rockets made with matches. I also loved the Letraset transfers things. So lets say that while I'm not exactly a craft person, I have an understanding of some crafts. I also create websites though I'm more of a developer than designer. Which brings me to Etsy.com.
Etsy is best described as a market place for Crafts. There are very many small craft designers out there and Etsy looks like a pretty good place to setup shop, with the only fees being 3.5% for selling stuff. I really like the look of this site which is clean and modern and the facilities they offer.
Just click the buy link and see how many different ways there are to locate items. You can browse a big list of categories, view seller's shops, view the treasury- a place where "you can create a visual list of your favorite items
on Etsy. You can choose to pick items in a theme (colors, animals,
holidays, or whatever tickles your fancy) or you can create a wish list
for the holidays or your birthday." (When it works – it was down when I tried it!!), you can select by colour or by seller's location or by connections between sellers or by showcase. (Phew- that's some ways to choose!)
Etsy uses Flash very nicely- the site is well designed and new features are being added or in the pipeline. I don't know how successful Etsy is, but on the basis of what they've created, this site deserves to do well. Highly recommended.
