Encyclopedia of Life

eol Encyclopedia of LifeThe page shown doesn't actually exists yet but gives an idea of what this project will achieve.  It is to publish a complete encyclopedia of all currently known (1.8 million) species that exist on Earth. Animal, vegetable etc.

It is belived that it will take ten years to complete, with the first pages available sometime in 2008.  This is no fly by night project but a collaborative work that involves senior officers from Harvard University, Smithsonian Institution, Field
Museum, Marine Biological Laboratory, Biodiversity Heritage Library
consortium, Missouri Botanical Garden, and the MacArthur and Sloan
Foundations, with new ones joining and I'd guess involvement from many of the world's institutions.

I find it very welcoming that this is being made available to everyone with different levels of information provided according to the user. I think this quote from their FAQ says it all "The richness of life will be at your fingertips. A website like the

excitement in a child’s face or the renewed sense of inquisitiveness in
an adult. Encyclopedia of Life is being constructed so child and adult
can experience that thrill of learning and exploring every day,
providing access to the information necessary to better understand our
environment and humanity’s role on this planet."

And it's interesting to see that the founders of the Encyclopedia acknowledge the success of Wikipedia in inspiring this. The Wikimedia Foundation is a member of the Encyclopedia’s Institutional Council.
