Digital Map Collection - David Rumsey
This is a site that has had a considerable amount of work (14,800 maps online!). The David Rumsey collection was founded nearly 20 years ago and (in their words) focussed
primarily on cartography of the Americas from the 18th and 19th
centuries. It also has maps of the World, Asia, Africa, Europe, and
Oceania. The collection includes atlases, globes, school geographies,
books, maritime charts, and a variety of separate maps, including
pocket, wall, children's and manuscript.
Over the last ten years this collection has been digitised to allow its
viewing on the web. The average map size at 300 dpi is 300 MB but
bigger maps can be 2GB! The digital viewers need to be installed and if
you are behind a firewall this may present problems.
As for David Rumsey, wikipedia has a bit including a photo of the man himself. Bit of an over achiever!
