Designing Furniture by Drawing
Motion capture techniques have been used for the last 10 years in the computer games industry and film making. It's just a method of digitising a sequence of moves. Now it's being done in the furniture business and combined with a 3d laser printer that can use the digital data and replicate exactly what the designers want to achieve.
It's early days yet – the printing process is too slow and there's no saying that the design is structurally sound. It reminds me of bad memories with plastic garden furniture that was definitely unsound. But it's a step forward in using advanced technology and no doubt the crinkles will be ironed out.
On the website there's a youtube vdeo of the designers drawing and having their motions (oo-er) captured.
