Computer Generated Water
Next time you see large streams of water, or rivers, or seas in a film, there's a good chance that it will be Computer Generated Imagery. (CGI). This Youtube video shows a few examples of just how good computer modelling of water is, from crashing waves to underwater scenes. I think it has gone past the point where you can tell if it's real or not.
The bit shown is modelling water flooding down a main street. A few seconds on, you can see it like it is in the film and it does look very realistic. It's easy to get blase about these effects but they are very well done.
