Clever Technology 2d to 3d automatically

Well it's only a start but researchers at Carnegie Mellon university have worked out a technique to transform a still 2d image so that it is correctly viewed in a 3d environment. Apparently this only works for outdoor scenes but it is a start. There's no way for example to add missing data, but if you have say 4 photos of a building on each side then transforming it into a 3d object may become a bit easier.
I'd guess the games industry will be one of the early benefitters. Creating 3d environments is a time consuming effort. But if you could get an artist to draw some fantastic 2d picture and then transform it.
The trick here is getting a computer to identify which edges are vertical or horizontal or facing the viewer. You can read more on this at the Carnegie Mellon Press Release.
