Can You Design an ARG (Game) to help Cancer Research?
This is a competition with the deadline of November 16th 2007 so you have three weeks. After that the winning team (there must be at least three of you) gets a couple of thousand pounds to complete the design and launch it with the full and not inconsiderable marketing muscle of Cancer Research UK.
Wikipedia as best sums it up. “An alternate reality game (ARG) is an interactive narrative that uses the real world as a platform, often involving multiple media and game elements, to tell a story that may be affected by participants’ ideas or actions.
The form is typified by intense player involvement with a story that takes place in real-time and evolves according to participants’ responses, and characters that are actively controlled by the game’s designers, as opposed to being controlled by artificial intelligence as in a computer or console video game. Players interact directly with characters in the game, solve plot-based challenges and puzzles, and often work together with a community to analyze the story and coordinate real-life and online activities. ARGs generally use multiple media (such as telephones, email, and mail) but rely on the Internet as the central binding medium.”
As a sometime games designer I’d love to have a go at this but am just a wee bit too busy.

Golden Jigsaw – Win $1,000,000 – Search for 1,000 Pieces
Unlike most of the win a large sum of money for finding things, this one appears to be entirely web-based. Hiding 1,000 pieces on websites across the length and breadth of the internet must have taken a bit of effort. Of course if the inventor registered say 50 websites of his own and put the pieces on them then that would be a lot easier.
The idea is, you sign up, then receive emails with clues. (Anagrams) and these provide the names of websites which contain hidden jigsaw pieces. First to get all 1,000 pieces collects the lot.
It already has 7,500 people signed up and starts this coming Friday (20th July) and runs for the next few months.
