Phishing is a fraudulent attempt, usually made through email, to steal your personal information. The best way to protect yourself from phishing is to learn how to recognize a phish. When you do, you could submit it to phishtank a public clearing house operated by the people behind Opendns.com
If you've ever reecived an email claiming to be from a bank/paypal/ebay etc saying they need to verify your account, or that your account has been suspended and you must login to verify it then that is a phishing attempt. Never log in via a link from an email unless it's one you initiated- as in registering with a website. If you have a Paypal etc account,just type in Paypal.com in your browser. Remember - Don't login by clicking a url in an unexpected email.
Phishtank provides a valuable service in identifying Phishing sources. Even with automation, it takes a short while to setup a new website. If that can be identified quickly as a phishing source then it becomes much less useful or can be closed down completely.
