Another Geocaching type Hobby – Letterboxing
(Typical Letterboxing stamp shown). This predates the GPS system though so isn't quite the same as Dropspots or geocaching. No GPS is used. Letterboxing started in the UK, in Devon and there are many letterboxes in the Dartmoor National Park. It crossed the Atlantic in 1998 and there are now approximately 5,000 boxes scattered across the USA. These letterboxes are not the same as the Post Office's letter boxes!
Letterboxing combines elements of orienteering, art and problem-solving. Letterboxers hide small, weatherproof boxes in publicly-accessible places (like parks) and distribute clues to finding the box in printed catalogs, on one of several web sites (see below), or by word of mouth. Individual letterboxes usually contain a logbook and a rubber stamp. Creating your own stamp is a mark of individuality and for some an essential part of this hobby.
