Advancing Through Competition - XPrizes
The X Prize Foundation, which includes one of the founders of Google as well as Anousheh Ansari (the first woman tourist in space) offers prizes to foster development in space travel, genome mapping and others. In just over two weeks time, the X Prize cup will take place in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
There will be three competitions: The Lunar Lander Challenge (a NASA-supported prize effort to demonstrate the ability of private companies to develop next-generation lunar landers), the Vertical Rocket Challenge (another lunar-landing-technology-focused competition), and the Space Elevator Games (a test of over 20 teams to use light to power a vehicle along a tether, this year up about 50 meters.
There will be tons more stuff to see and do, including seeing Anousheh herself, rocket launches, even the launch of the Rocket Racing league development craft X-Racer.
